Recently, two of our employees shared their thoughts on the industry — and their place in it.
Lori Danner, AMX accounting manager, has been with the company for 26 years. She didn’t expect that her entire career would be in the trucking industry, but that doesn’t mean she’d have changed anything.
“I grew up in the industry, handling freight bills, along with a lot of other tasks for my family’s trucking company,” said Lori. “When the company was purchased by Summerford and later AMX, I came along for the ride. I’ve had a lot of roles since, from billing to sales to accounting. All of them have been important. That’s the nature of the logistics business, everybody relies on each other to get the job done.”
Newer to the company, logistics solutions specialist, Laruen Hohbach, discussed what drew her to the industry.
“Logistics is a $700B industry,” said Lauren. “Everybody relies on the trucking industry to purchase everyday consumables. I love the challenge in figuring out how to get products to people as quickly as possible. And since I feel like it’s a job that’s only going to grow in importance, I’d have more opportunities to advance my career.”
The two women have distinct everyday roles, but they’re bound by a driving motivator every day.
“At the end of the day, it’s about our customers,” said Lori. “We want them to feel part of the extended AMX family. Those relationships built on trust and collaboration can get us through almost any challenge. That’s why it’s critical to interact with them daily. I like to think we go the extra mile to keep our promises and stay true to our word.”
Lauren shared her thoughts on why customers choose to work with AMX.
“We’re the best at what we do,” she said. “And that’s because the management team is clear from Day One that AMX is committed to its customers and drivers. Everybody on the team will do what’s necessary to get the job done. In fact, Collins White (president of logistics) sits two desks away and I hear him talking to customers and reassuring them every day.”
When asked for what advice they’d give prospects debating about a career in the trucking and logistics industry, the women shared details about what to look for in a company.
“Logistics is a job for people that want to be challenged while having a lot of fun,” said Lori. “I’ve dealt with my fair share of issues over the years. The job isn’t over after the freight is loaded. In fact, it’s usually only beginning. Things are going to pop up every day to make my job more complicated. Fortunately, that’s when I get to problem solve and work with my teammates. And working as a team is the fun part.”
Lauren discussed the potential opportunities available.
“Every day will bring something different, something new,” said Lauren. “Shipments are going to be late. Trucks are going to break down. I’m excited that it’s up to me to figure it out. I’m pushed to limits I didn’t even know existed in this role. Each new challenge is an opportunity to enhance my skills and show off what I can do. I think that kind of showcase is great for career advancement.”
As an experienced veteran of the industry, Lori has had many opportunities to pursue other positions with other companies. Meanwhile, Lauren recently chose AMX to expand on her career. What’s the secret?
“AMX is a proven company,” said Lori. “These people know the industry. They know who they are. They know what kind of company they want AMX to be. Most importantly, they take the time to know the names of every employee and customer. That sort of family-friendly atmosphere makes coming to work enjoyable.”
Lauren echoed the sentiment. “I feel valued as a person,” she said. “In an industry this big, I’m working with people who not only know my first name, they want to learn more about me and how they can help me succeed. I’ve found the right profession, and the right place.”
